I guess it is too early to ask if anyone tryed Solaris 8.
However would someone, who used Solaris AND BSD flavours tell me their opinion on
how would you compare Solaris to BSD.

Stability, speed ease of use, better as a server or desktop, etc...??

The reason I am asking this is, after I read the review on Solaris 8 been voted as No. 1 UNIX OS, the review did not look at BSD at all. Only AIX, Tru64 from Compaq, and three others. Now, BSD is free just like Solaris, so why wouldn't they even look at it ?

I use SGI IRIX, Solaris (SunOS) 4 thru 8 and BSD at work and I prefer IRIX and BSD the best. Just the way they do administration routines. Solaris is Okay, far better than SCO which is in the dark ages. Since most of us can't afford 02's then BSD is your best bet in my book.

Any of the BSD's are just fine. FreeBSD is best for the desktop machine if your a newbie.

:D

PS
For a comparable Linux, it would be Debian or Slackware.

I've been using an old Ultra Sparc 5 here at work running Solaris 8. Its been the most stable desktop machine I've used. Been up since I installed the OS...214 days.

I usually stick to BSD for Intel boxes, and Solaris for the Sparc.

I run solaris on an sparc 10 at home. Solaris 8 that is. It is very stable on a sun box, and it is faster on a sun box. However I do not like it on X86 box, it seems slower to me. The major differnce is going to be in the fact that bsd is ...well bsd based unix, solaris is system v, commands do the same thing but are different. ie ps aux on bsd and ps -ef on solaris.
