Been a while since I have logged into this site. Hope everyone is happy since the changeover. I have a cheat sheet/NHF that I am currently working on for Solaris 8 and I want to guage the interest level here. If you would like to see this posted here, please let me know by replying to this thread.

Also, if you have any specific question that you are interested in having answered, I will do my best to help and include it in one of the installments.

I may be. I did not get it set up the way I wanted so I removed it until I could educte myself some more. But any help file for any *nix system is always welcome by me. I may not need it right away but you never know.

(What is the Solaris 8 topic that your NHF deals with?)

The purpose of the NHF will be to provide a general command reference as well as some specific administration instructions for common tasks. I did another one a while back on setting up @HOME with Solaris 8.

LinuxNewbie NHF on @HOME cable setup for Solaris 8 (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/solaris/homecable_setup.html)

If you have any specific questions about setting up Solaris 8 I could try to help you out, and possibly include the solutions in the document.

Here is the table of contents so far:

1. About this Guide
1.1. Purpose / Scope of this Guide
1.2. Feedback
1.3. Copyrights and Trademarks
1.4. Acknowledgments and Thanks
1.5. Documents
2. Introduction to Solaris 8
2.1. Some basic terms and commands
2.2. OpenBoot
2.3. Installation of Solaris 8 OE
2.4. Package and Patch Administration Commands
2.5. Booting Solaris 8 OE

It is running about 15 pages [landscape] right now, and will only be getting longer.

Hope this helps clarify my earlier post.

Sounds good. The problem for me was when I installed it I don't think I understood everthing thast was going on and as a result I didn't(I don't think anyway) the graphics card functioning properly and my network card wasn't recoginzed. If I had had some more newbieized documentation I probably would have gotten further with Solaris. Alot of documentation that I read was just slightly above my understanding (much like alot of acronyms on this board!). I confess that I am a *nix idiot but I am more than willing to expand my knowledge as long as there are those that can help when I am at an impass. I will likely read it if you post it and rebuild my nerve to reinstall Solaris. (Boy am I amassing a large collection of OSes that I would like to learn! And Solaris is one.)Thank you for generating my interest again!

They have fixed some of the earlier problems with installation, and added device support. Maybe they have added you equipment. Check it out....

Thank! I wil have to take a closer look when I am not so tired. If I got it to boot into CDE I guess that would be a start? I did manage to do this. From a quick glace I did not see my network card in there. But I will take a longer look tomorrow when I will actually write down some of my machine's specs (I sure that would help
;) )

just out of curiosity, what makes Solaris better than a BSD on a single-processor x86?

Well, for me it was initially a financial decision. There was an oportunity for me if I could show a certain level of proficiency with Solaris, so I started in with Sol8_x86 and away I went.

I have played around with FreeBSD since about v3.2, and I have been eagerly awaiting v5.0 (Still a ways off from what I am reading). I personally love FreeBSD, but I cannot make a good enough case where I am at to get a box in our DC.

Anyhow, for me, it was simply a matter of what is more acceptable in a business situation. If you learn one, you can jump to the other relatively easily. I have to say though that the PORTS COLLECTION is probably one of the best damn ideas I have ever come across.

I see that you included the boot prom, hence making it the sparc version, you might consider branching the NHF a bit to include stuff pertaining to X86 configuration. It looks good so far, but you might need to flesh it out a bit, stops fairly short after the beginning install. Need any help, let me or know. I'm sure Stiles would also help out on this one if you need the extra manpower(these can get long and involved).

Oh I want to see that. I'm interested my deepest thanks for the work you are putting into this. If you need any help looking for materials let me know. I live to surf the web in search of useful information, and not so useful information. But I really want to get more familiar with Solaris. So this is a great Idea.

Thanks Whole big bunches
Denise :-) :D
