What are your thoughts? freebsd 03-29-2001, 11:36 AM Is Slackware a Linux distribution? How about SuSE? You know what Other UNIX based OS's forum is for? Hartmann 03-29-2001, 08:30 PM Slackware uses BSDi :) TaeShadow 03-29-2001, 09:17 PM Wrong forum, but yes, you should install it instead of SuSE. jbstew32 03-29-2001, 11:45 PM who cares what forum it is...screw it! Slackware  SuSE is great but Slack is WAY better! Only use Slack tho if you really want to learn linux...it requires editing config files a lot cause it does have linuxconf or xconfigurator....but that just makes it great! Slackware  ifred 03-30-2001, 01:45 AM Okay, okay wrong forum but . . . hell yeah you should install Slack! Beowulfs_Ghost 03-30-2001, 02:44 AM Being this is the "Other Unix's Forum", my recomendations are; BeOS FreeBSD Solaris NetBSD OpenBSD Hurd QNX and just for added kicks  OS/400  Neurotica 03-30-2001, 05:10 AM Slackware is defiently one of the best distrobutions right now. IMO its the best out right now, next to debian. Rock Linux comes to mind, but its still in development. Slackware follows the KISS method to a distrobution. Keep It Simple Stupid. Very easy to setup, very configurable at the same time... unlike other distros which are filled with stupid pretty happy "click here to automatically do everything(in an unsecure and bastardized way)" Hartmann 03-30-2001, 10:40 AM GREAT! As soon as I get my new comp (PIII 866MhZ) I will install it! :D freebsd 03-30-2001, 12:54 PM The whole point of my post was to tell you not to post something inappropriate in this forum. Slackware or Debian, I don't give a damn! I don't check forums other than Networking Linux, Other Unix based OS's and Web Serving/Security. I and many others here wanted to get the most out of our favorite forums. Seeing inappropriate messages defeats the purpose of multiple forums here. Why not just a catch-all forum then? Just don't do it again!! Enough said. [ 30 March 2001: Message edited by: freebsd ] Hartmann 03-30-2001, 01:18 PM I just thought that Slackware uses a form of BSD that the post was appropriate for here. freebsd 03-30-2001, 01:54 PM If you were comparing Slackware and BSD, that would be more than appropriate here. However, I received Slackware 7.1 as a gift and was wondering if I should install that instead of SuSE...? What are your thoughts? has no indication or intention to be related to BSD. Just plea guilty on this and don't do it again. It's a common sense posting message like yours to the inappropriate forum is unfriendly and immoral plus the waste of resource and bandwidth to linuxnewbie.org and its members. I can't stop you anyway. To do it again or not, you make the call. 11000 03-30-2001, 02:01 PM  FoBoT 03-30-2001, 02:24 PM Originally posted by Beowulfs_Ghost: BeOS  BeOS  and now the rumor that it will be open sourced? that would be  Neurotica 03-30-2001, 04:35 PM As far as servers go for me, I'd use one of the BSD varient. For security and stability you cant go wrong with Free/Open/Net Hartmann 03-30-2001, 05:16 PM I never said I wasn't pleading guilty.... I understand what you are saying. It is just that I already have SuSE installed and was wondering if Slackware is a better alternative. I guess I didn't make my self clear enough. Sorry. Take both of the CD's and throw them in the garbage. TC 03-31-2001, 06:08 PM SGI :D kuber 03-31-2001, 06:09 PM It is immoral to post on an inappropriate forum? Damn, are you the linux holy roller or something? lol xulfralos 04-03-2001, 05:36 PM I think what freebsd is tryin' to say is that this question should have been asked in one of the LINUX forums, since Slackware and SUSE are both LINUX and not an 'Other UNIX-based OS'. Yes, Slackware may a distant cousin of BSD, but it's still LINUX. Get it? Sorry.</STRONG> Not to further the spam, but I'll add onto the post from xulfralos.. Slackware does have a BSD-style init, as opposed to SysV, (eg: Redhat) but it is still Linux under the hood. Among other things it uses the Linux kernel, GNU utils and obviously a GPL license. Slack is a fine distro, but belongs in a linux category. And yes, Slack is a registered trademark of BSDi and Patrick V, but its not a BSD. Besides that mess.. Sure give it a try. It'll be less `friendly` than suse, but you might learn more without the layers of fluff. -r jbstew32 04-09-2001, 11:50 PM isnt BSDi just a company that packages slack into its pretty little box and distributes it to stores?? justlinux.com
