I'm looking at installing solaris 8 for x86 and I'm not sure if my Hardware will work well with it or not.
My two options would be an asus p5a (amd k6 board) with a voodoo3 or an abit ka7 with a geforce2 mx
(both agp)
As well are you able to dual boot solaris and win98 if win98 previosuly installed?

does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks

Building a solaris x86 box can be a pain in the ***. Goto http://docs.sun.com/ and check out the hardware compatibility list for the version you plan to run. I didnt see either one of those video cards on the supported list for Solaris 2.8. That means really crappy video support. I bought an old Matrox MGA just to get decent graphics in X. In the long run I ended up getting rid of Solaris in favor of linux on x86 machines. If you want to run Solaris its much easier to learn and get started on a Sparc machine.

so it's kinda like linux and x? if your video cards not supproted you'll get 640x480 in 8 bit color if lucky?
I have an extra HD I wanna try it out and I don't wanna sepnd the money to pick up a sprc box just yet :) how much ram does it need at minumum?

X in solaris is worse because native support only covers a hand full of video cards. 640x480 8bit would be the best you would get most likely. Not a pretty desktop at all. Anyway 64 megs is the bare min for 2.8 and if its less than a PII its going to be dog slow. Good luck with it.
