BTW- this post is brought to you by BeOS Pro Edition 5.0 http://www.fobot.net/cc/beos.jpg [ 02 May 2001: Message edited by: FoBoT-9223 ] jemfinch 05-02-2001, 09:36 AM He's right. BeOS isn't *nix based. It's not even close. A sh does not a *nix make. Besides, nothing *nix based could suck as much as BeOS. :D Jeremy FoBoT 05-02-2001, 10:44 AM Originally posted by jemfinch: He's right. i wasn't asking if he was right or not, i was wondering what compulsion drove im to post this information from the BeOS website Is the BeOS based on Linux or UNIX? No, but BeOS has been influenced by many operating systems. You may notice a lot of other-OS-isms within BeOS. Our engineers come from lots of backgrounds, and we have implemented the ideas we like best. In relation to UNIX, our system sports bash from GNU as a command line interface, and a POSIX compatibility library. With many of the GNU applications ported to the BeOS and available from the bash command line, we have what for many people is a reasonable replacement for UNIX. We're hoping that enterprising developers will port and distribute all the other whizzy UNIX-derived commands we don't get to. We have a nearly complete POSIX layer to make this easier. Many of our graphic interface elements are based on interface component ideas we had while using other operating system environments, and some concepts come from ideas started on other operating systems. there now is everybody happy? or is the point that BeOS questions shouldn't be posted in a forum titled "Other Unix based OS's" ?? just wondering  Beowulfs_Ghost 05-02-2001, 02:36 PM I guess the whole issue depends on your definition of Unix. You can't deny that BeOS has some Unix features. And it does have some POSIX support. Be you can't, in all honesty, call it "Unix based" in the lines of Linux, BSD, or Solaris. But I don't under stand the whole point of mf4's post. What is he trying ot imply?
