I just noticed that FreeBSD recognizes my 10+ char length passwords as 9 ... anything more than 9 it just uses the first 9 chars. Does anyone know if this is standard or just some configuration error somewhere? I noticed the same thing with Webmin under Linux (Slack and Mandrake).

Ok, nm, I installed FreeBSD 4.1.1 (4.11?) and it fixed the problem.
That's odd, it was only supposed to recognise the first eight characters. If you can't come up with a good password in eight characters, you might as well give up http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

I say have as long a password as you can!
my password for root is around 23 letters (not exactly that cause that would open security holes)
my normal g0rn password is only like 12 or so. people at my school (highschool) laugh when i check my email with a 22 or so letter password. But it's worth it. To know that if someone surfed my password they couldn't remember it! Ha!
