Well I mushed it up pretty badly. I tried updating my system by trying to use a 2.4 kernel. Downloaded a 2.4 kernel from a site that was describing how to install on a pismo powerbook(that's what I've got). I took it step by step, got the kernel in and working, actually I just downloaded the kernel and pointed to it in yaboot.conf. The machine booted np to continue I needed to download XFree86 4.0.2 and all it's parts and install. Ah this is where everything went to hell in a hand basket. After installing all the rpms, I used rpms what do I know? I'm a newbie ;-]. Rebooted and as the text scrolls by where there was a "Welcome to LinuxPPC" there was now "Welcome to Red Hat Linux" OMG it just kept recycling the screen, newbie panic sets in and wtf am going to do to recover? Did I have a backup of the system before I started mucking with it? NO! I'm a newbie what do I know about backing a linux box? Nada, zip, zilch. All I wanted was to have 24bit colour. Well my swap never did work, wrong partition order, so I decided to wipe and swipe, did a complete re-install setting my swap partition to a better position. Took a day between my other duties at work and finished up at home. I kept the 2.4 kernel and even used it for a bit before I realized it was keeping me from using ppp so I went back to 2.2.18, got ppp running again.

I lost all my bookmarks in Opera, as well as a few binaries and linux notes I was putting together. But most disturbing is that Netscape won't install or gcc. Netscape failed install when I re-installed linuxppc and when I try to install from the disk it still fails along with gcc, which I tried to install as well. I'm not sure what the problem is. Is it the disk? I don't know.

Well I mostly wanted to just let other newbies know what this newbie has gone through as a pre-caution. On the plus side I got swap working now, I've learned some stuff and I'm writing this using Opera from linux.

My advice? Be wery wery careful. ;-]

ciao

OK here is the reason why I couldn't install Netscape and gcc. When I repartitioned my drive I made one for /usr but made it too small, 300MB. Well I again repartitioned and installed linuxppc again, getting faster at this, with a larger /usr, 1GB. After the install and adding Opera and Mozilla the /usr partition is 42% full.
