Anybody out there pre-ordering their copy of OSX? I haven't played with the beta myself but I've heard some good things. With BSD as its base, makes you wonder whether PPC-based Linux will suffer, population-wise. Personally, I'm considering removing the LPPC partition from my G3 entirely & replacing it with OSX (I have an Intel-based machine with Mandrake on it & Debian on an Old Quadra, so I wouldn't be abandoning Linux entirely). After some more OSX-native apps come out, I might lose the OS9 partition too & make the box all OSX, but that's probably a ways off.

I probably don't have to preorder OS X, as my wife works at Apple and gets OS upgrades for free. ;) Anyway, I don't think that OS X would really replace PPC Linux, as there will still be a world of difference between the two. I definitely plan on installing OS X as soon as I get it (I have the public beta installed right now), but I'm still curious about installing Linux, too. I just won't be able to do it until I get a new system. My Rev. B iMac (complete with 4 GB HD) just won't hack dual-booting right now.

No pre-orders, but I have been playing around with the beta for a little while. Its a pretty nice, navigable package; I like it a lot more than prior Mac approaches. I just wish it had a little more Unix meat behind it.
Seriously though, I'll need to put the OS X-native versions of my favorite apps through some serious paces before I do *any* migrating (Classic emulation is unbearably doggy). Till then, I'll just keep the system the way it is: a quadruple-boot, 8.6/9.1/X beta/LinuxPPC mad-scientist's playpen. :D

From what I've heard, Classic will run a HELL of a lot faster in the final release than it does with the beta. Same goes for the overall OS. The only thing I'll be miffed about is the features that will be lacking from the final release, ie DVD playback, iTunes, iMovie. I use iTunes quite a bit right now, so I'll definitely miss it...
