I'm currently using XFree version 3 but
suse has an auto config for version 4
using Sax2.

Every time I try to upgrade to version
4 my monitor goes black and just
doing a base kernal replacement will
not fix this problem and I have to do an
installation from scratch.

I know all my specs--res. monitor type
and so on. I even called Apple to confirm
the specs.

I read somewhere something about a
problem with ATI Rage 128 and version
4 not being compatible.
Is this true and if so does anyone know
what can be done to resolve this.

thanks

I believe it should be possible to get your card to work. What happens when you run Sax2?
Does it generate a config file at all? What error messages does XFree produce? (check in /var/log/XFree86.0.log)... Frankly, I'd suggest sending the whole mess to SuSE's tech support - it worked for me http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif (with Mach64 card)

I have been getting tech support and it
is not addressing this problem too well.
So, I signed on with the newbie BB for this and other things.

A friend of mine came over last night
and said that you can't run Sax2 while
you're at the desktop--GNOME--in this
case. (He wasn't clear and thus I determined he too doesn't know what he's doing). Usually people aren't clear
when they really don't know! (:

If I were to run this whole thing from a
terminal, how should I proceed?
Or can I? How did you do it?

thank you

It shouldn't matter you're using Gnome - all Sax2 does is write config file that won't kick in until you restart X anyway...
Just to be sure, you do realise changing from XFree 3.3 to 4 involves: getting a right config file, linking something to something else, and executing switch-to-v4 command, right?
I don't have the details in front of me, but it's all described in README file on the install disk. These are the steps I followed to get it to work. Except the config file wasn't very good - I needed to run sax (not sax2) with a certain switch to get mach64 version, and then I still had to change the resolution by hand... The only suggestion I have, really, is if sax2 fails to come up with the goods, you can try starting with one of the prepared config files found in /unsorted on your install disk and edit it by hand if neccessary - you might get lucky that way...
