I was thinking about getting a G4. I was looking at the G4 cube, then I saw that it had no 1.4" disk place. So I was looking at other G4's and they dont have any either. What if you need a boot disk or something, is there a reason why they did this??? Then I noticed today that my friends Imac didnt have one either, he was using a zip drive for saving stuff. I think that is wierd.

But any way can anyone tell me anything about the G4's ( I noticed the highest I could find was a 400mhz ). I was thinking if I did buy one I could dual boot the Mac OS with something, I was thinking I wanted to try FreeBSD or BeOS, since I already have linux put on my PC. Is it hard to Dual boot a mac, would FreeBSD or BeOS even work on a mac.

Also does anyone have any good sites for macs?? Maybe similar to this site??? Maybe one that would either persuade me to buy or not buy a mac??

Sorry for the long post. Im just curious.

Thanks for any help.

Use a CD-Rom to boot

I'd go with BeOS, since it was ported to i386 from Mac. I don't think FreeBSD has been ported to Mac, but check www.freebsd.org (http://www.freebsd.org) to find out.

The last time I checked, FreeBSD is available for PPC. I wouldn't want to play with BeOS on a G4, because it hasn't been officially supported for the Mac since before the G3 came out (Be, and Apple never saw eye-to-eye about licensing issues for the new chip).

The 733MHz G4 is the fastest one out there, on the tower; the new iMac SE's have a 600MHz G3, and the 500MHz G4 can be had on the Ti PowerBook.

MacOS X could be the single most important reason to get a Mac. The updates are coming very quickly, and it's based on BSD Unix; so there are Unix/Linux apps that already work with it. MacOS apps are being ported to OS X on a weekly basis too (but you can still run legacy Mac apps on the 'blue' side of OS X, without any of the cool benefits of the new architecture though).

I'd like to get a G4 running with LinuxPPC ('cause I already have it), and then with FreeBSD; so let me know how it turned out for you :).

I am not running it on my g4 yet, because I am using it for OSX and 9.1. My Nix is on my G3.

I am using the dual processor 450. It is rather rapid. Don't get hung up on processor speed, but do wait for the new duals to come out. they will kick ***.

Get a Zip, slide it in the empty bay.
