Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Upgraded to 4.02, and got stuck w/TWM

The subject tells the basics,
the specifics are:
RH 7.0
Ximian Gnome using Sawfish
Red Carpet updater

The short story is that I got impatient for an X update from Ximian, and downloaded the
binaries from X.org. The installation went
pretty well until I realized that it defaulted to using TWM.

I tried an earlier suggestion of creating a .xinitrc that points to enlightenment, but that bombed. As does Xconfigurator.
I made an attempt at reinstalling Ximian, but it still defaults to TWM.

Any suggestions?

Take a look at your /etc/gdm/gdm.conf file and see whether there's any mention of twm. Here are the first few lines of mine:

[daemon]
Chooser=/usr/bin/gdmchooser --disable-sound --disable-crash-dialog
DefaultPath=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games
DisplayInitDir=/etc/gdm/Init
Greeter=/usr/bin/gdmlogin --disable-sound --disable-crash-dialog
Group=gdm
HaltCommand=/sbin/shutdown -h now "Halted from gdm menu."
KillInitClients=1
LogDir=/var/log/gdm
PidFile=/var/run/gdm.pid
PostSessionScriptDir=/etc/gdm/PostSession/
PreSessionScriptDir=/etc/gdm/PreSession/
RebootCommand=/sbin/shutdown -r now "Rebooted from gdm menu."
RootPath=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/games
ServAuthDir=/var/lib/gdm
SessionDir=/etc/gdm/Sessions/
User=gdm
UserAuthDir=
UserAuthFBDir=/tmp
UserAuthFile=.Xauthority

Specifically, I think that "greeter" should be gdmlogin. Of course, that's assuming that you start up and it goes straight into twm. If you mean that you're using Gnome and Gnome chooses twm as its window manager, then open up your Gnome control center and change window managers.
Also, take a look at /etc/gdm/Sessions and see what you have there. There should be at least "Default" and "Gnome".

Nothing about TWM in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

Here's the relavant portions of mine:

[daemon]
Chooser=/usr/bin/gdmchooser --disable-sound --disable-crash-dialog
DefaultPath=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin
DisplayInitDir=/etc/X11/gdm/Init
Greeter=/usr/bin/gdmlogin --disable-sound --disable-crash-dialog

KillInitClients=1

PreSessionScriptDir=/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/

ServAuthDir=/var/gdm
SessionDir=/etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/
User=gdm
UserAuthDir=
UserAuthFBDir=/tmp
UserAuthFile=.Xauthority

When I spoke with a co-worker about this, he suggested that I swipe the startx script from another RH 7.0 box. I ended up with the same results: nasty, icky TWM.

I don't _think_ I'm dealing with gnome at all in this. But I've never been too clear on the differences between window managers and desktops, so I could easily be wrong.

I do apreciate the assistance!

Okay, I'm sufficiently freaked out.

I started X just to have a GUI running rather than doing everything in console mode, and it
started up with Enlightenment. Though not Gnome...

Very weird.

Looks like Gnome isn't fully functional. Nor do I have access to any other window manager than Enlightenment. A year ago this wouldn't have bothered me, but I've come to be very fond of Sawfish.

Oddly enough, the Gnome control panel claims that Sawfish IS my current WM, despite the undeniable fact that I have nothing but E options WM menu I get. Any time I attempt to switch to another WM, X comes to a grinding halt.

Any suggestions?

Hey! I'm having the same problem!! But it's near my exams and I haven't really gotten down to sort this out.

Now, I'm booting into command line and when I want the GUI, I use startx. That brings me into gnome and sawfish. Dunno why it doesn't happen at runlevel 5.
