I haven't been using gnome for a long time and now I keep hearing about helix and ximian gnome... now what are these and how do they differ from the "original" gnome??

Helixcode gnome is what's known as Ximian gnome. Basically, Ximian gnome is a "distribution" of gnome. They are the ones developing Red Carpet, Evolution, Gnumeric and a couple of other packages to improve on what the Gnome project has done. I hope that makes sense.

More precisely, Ximian (formerly Helix Code) is a for profit company founded by Miguel de Icaza, one of the primary developers for GNOME.

They have a nifty update service (similiar to apt) if your distro is supported. More can be found at www.ximian.com (http://www.ximian.com)

If you do have apt, then you can still go to Ximian (http://www.ximian.com) to add them to your apt list.
