Hi everyone,
Sorry to post on a similar problem again.
I have installed XFree86 4.0.3 and created a new config file with all the settings i require.
When i boot up, KDE does not start automatically(which it did before i installed 4.0.3) so i log in and start KDEfrom the prompt. I get an error message as follows:
"Config error: /etc/xfconfig:48 subsection "extmod" module section keyword expected, X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)
I thought that the config file resided in /etc/X11/, not in /etc/. I am using Caldera OpenLinux 2.3. I installed 4.0.3 because it supports my Savage4 card better than 3.3.6. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

subsection "extmod" module section keyword expected

Can you see anything incorrect in the modules section of your XF86Config-4 file?

Post here if necessary and we'll have a look.

Hi,thanks for replying.
Unfortunately i am not at my home computer at the moment, so i am unable to have a look at the config file right now. What should i be looking for? Are there some extensions that are not being loaded correctly? Could i get round the error by commenting anything out or should i run the Xfree86 -configure again? Your help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

I apologise for cross posting. I was unsure if this was a tech support question or one for the window/desktop manager group. sorry about that it won't happen again.

By the way, how do you like OpenLinux 2.3? I've been using Caldera's distros since I bought my first Linux book which came with version 1.3. Although by the time I got around installing 1.3, Caldera released 2.2, so that's what I used. Followed with 2.3 and now eDesktop 2.4.

Though Caldera doesn't seem to be the most popular distro here, I am quite satisfied with the product. Everything always works right out of the box. Video, ethernet, sound and I never have problems installing other software such as WMWare, IBM's TSM Client, VNC and others.

You should check out eDesktop 2.4 and the next version now in beta. I'm planning to download OpenLinux Workstation 3.1 beta in a couple of days and give it a try on one of my work PC's.

Let me know if you ever need any further assistance with OpenLinux.

On another note, I noticed your from the UK. I was born in Northampton way back when, but imigrated to Canada when I was 2 (by boat).

I think OpenLinux 2.3 is very good for someone new to linux to learn on. The install is quite straightforward, as long as you can get your head around the idea of how Linux names partitions, drives etc. to say it was included with a tutorial book i am very, very pleased with it.
I have just ordered a copy of eDesktop 2.4 from the KDE website ($4.95 + shipping)on CD,on your previous reccomendation, so i am looking forward to installing that!
Have you been back to the UK recently? i'm from Halifax, in West Yorks. My best man at my wedding is from Saskatoon! But i havn't seen him for a couple of years now.
Thanks for your help, no doubt you will be hearing from me soon. Thanks. :)

Is your problems fixed? Some in XF86Config-4?

You'll enjoy eDesktop 2.4. Will be trying the new Workstation 3.1 beta probably next week and of course will continue to be a Caldera user when 3.1 is released.

I came to Canada when I was 2 and have never been back. Long time ago and don't ask. Have no memories of England, so I've never felt the desire to visit. Only have a few relatives back home and they usually come out here every couple of years. My close relatives live in the U.S.

Hi again,
I still havn't got to the bottom of my problem, i commented out everything in the modules section of the conf file but now i get another error message about the "input devices". i will reinstall 4.0.3 and run the -configure again to see if i changed anything the first time around. if not i will wait for my eDesktop disk to arrive (7-10 days) amd see what happens then. Any ideas why it picks up the conf file in /etc/ before /etc/X11/? i tried removing the file (in /etc/) but i got an error saying the conf file could not be found. Is there somewhere i could change the default file path? Thanks a lot for your patience, its hard learning a new OS. :)

All I know is that the config file is now named XF86Config-4 and resides in a different location than it did before. Of course you can symlink the new to the old location. /etc/X11 to /etc or vice versa.

Have you read the documentation at www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) on the setup, options and keywords etc. on XF86Config? Might have something on the 'extmod' module section. You probably have lots of docs already installed in /etc/X11 ?

Thanks for that,
Could you possibly point me in the right direction towards a NHF or tutorial on Sym links? I have heard of them but havn't created one yet! Thanks for your help.

Only found something in the Basic Commands NHF.

ln -s x y Make a symbolic link from x to y

Should be man pages for it.

man (ln or symlink or link) Give them a try.

Hi,
I just received eDesktop 2.4 and installed it last night. fantastic, it detected my card and everything, setup was a complete breeze. I now have a desktop 800 x 600 (i only have a 15in monitor) with true colour that looks great. im really impressed, after spending all last week with my other problem.
thanks for your help before, i appreciated the time you took!!

You can get updates for eDesktop 2.4 here (http://support.calderasystems.com/caldera) and other documentation etc.

Helix-Gnome installs easily on eD 2.4 in case your interested. I guess it's now called Ximian or something.

Let me know if you ever need any help with it.
