X and Intel 810i

So my p3 dell optiplex GX110 got RH7.0 going pretty smoothly. Xconfigurator sees the video just fine, but when I exit and run startx (iwth XFree 4.03) there seems to be a grey haze over top of all the video, like there's no contrast or it's not bright enough.

the monitor is fine, looks "great" with NT behind it.

this is not the problem described by Intel for this chipset (for which they published a kernel patch which I haven't tried).

the problem that the kernel patch claims to solve is different from what I have ... so I don't want to go thru the work of applying the patch if it's not going to solve the prob. Was hoping for other ideas ... ?
