Hi, im really sorry about the cross post but i think i should have posted hare first!
Could someone please help a newbie!
I have recently installed Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 form a disk included with the idiots guide book. The install went fine, but i have had trouble configuring the Xserver. i tried using the Lizardx setup, which i think is Caldera's own setup wizard?, but i can only get a display with 256 colours and 600 x 480 resolution. I have a Creative labs graphic blaster 3D card with an S3 savage4 chip. I have correctly set my monitor from the monitors manual but to no avail. I downloaded XFree86 4.02 and 4.03 from Xfree.org and run the install and xf86config program from both. Even though i have read on the Xfree website that the savage4 chip is supported, in the config program it says it isn't. I downloaded drivers for Linux from Creatives website for the card and ran the install, selecting the correct settings for everything but once i start KDE nothing has changed. Am i missing a vital part of the configuration or do i have to manually alter the config file. If so which one, i seem to have a couple at least, one in root and one in the Xserver directory. Please can someone help as i am getting desperate. Thanks in advance.

Really don't know how to help you.

'X -version' will verify what version of X you are now running.

I have eDesktop 2.4 (X3.3.6) and my Diamond S540 (Savage4) was detected perfectly by the Lizard install and was setup using 1600x1200 16bit.

Hi, thanks for replying!
I think with the 4.02 and 4.03 version of xfree86 there is only one server now as with 3.3.6 there are a few to choose from.
When i run the XF86Config program, it says that the chip found is the savage4 but in the card list it is "null". maybe i should upgrade my card, or maybe get hold of eDesktop 2.4. Thanks anyway.

Marc:

a) check this website
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html

b) the 'driver' reference in /etc/X11/XF86Config should point at "savage"
(no need for the extension) ///

I am running X4.0.3 with that same card .. 32mb version ... no 3d yet ..but it works fine at 1280*1024, truecolor.

Have you tried the troubleshooting section in the Xfree How-to here (http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/XFree86-HOWTO/index.html)?
