Hi, I am currently using Mandrake 7.2 and Gnome. I just have a few questions about Gnome(I am a "newbie")
1) When I changed the themes, I noticed that all of the fonts are pretty small when on the net---is that just how Netscape looks, or is there a way to make the font a little bigger?
2) Where/how do I get some different background images?
3) When I start up lately, my toolbar is in the middle of the screen. I already tried removing the messed up one, but it still does that when it starts. How can I fix this?
4) Where can I look at how much disk space I have? Kinda like "properties" in Windows.
5) Thanks for all your help :)

1. Doesn't Preferences/Fonts work in Netscape. Does for me. Or read the NHF here on TTF and Netscape.
2. www.themes.org (http://www.themes.org) ?
3. I don't know. Reinstall Gnome?
4. How about again the NHF's here http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/shells/basic.html
I would suggest you read through the NHF's here and also the FAQ's. You should get a basic understanding of Linux. Read the documentation, How-To's and man pages installed on your system.

How about the obvious? www.gnome.org (http://www.gnome.org) Anything there to help you?

You're still getting responses in your OLD 'nic problem' post in Networking.
Now didn't I tell you what happens when you cross-post?

Hey, thanks for the themes link. A lot of themes there! Question though, do I have to use a different window manager or something? I see some reference on there to Window Maker. I currently use gnome/sawfish. Do I need to change this? If so, how? Oh, and I noticed on alot of them that the buttons and such look totally different from mine---when I install the theme will my desktop look as good as those do?

Sorry, never used WindowMaker or Gnome/Sawfish. I either use KDE or Helix-Gnome.
Each of them should have their own website with documentation I would imagine.

You don't need to change anything. If you want to change the window manager, you can do it with the Gnome's control center. You can use many window managers with Gnome, although Sawfish, Enlightenment, Window Maker and IceWM work best with Gnome.
Here's a little tip for themes. For using with Gnome and Sawfish, you need to download Sawfish themes, of course. You can also download some GTK themes for changing the look of Gnome's apps: panel, file manager etc. The GTK themes change also the look of every app that uses GTK libs so some of your apps may have a totally different look with different themes.
You want a cool desktop? It depends on the Sawfish and GTK themes you download. Try many different themes and surely you'll get something cool. ;)
If you want more info about the different window managers, do like mdwatts suggested and check their websites.

OK, when I go to themes.org I select sawfish. I downloaded an Aqua theme that came as a tarball. How do I install this theme? I clicked on install new theme and selected the aqua, but it said invalid file format. I still really have no clue how to install things in Linux yet--but Im getting better :)

I've never used Sawfish myself but here's a link that should tell how to install a theme:
http://sawmill.themes.org/php/docs.phtml?docid=52&secid=1.0

Oh... one thing that came to my mind. Did you use Gnome's control center when you tried to install the Sawfish theme? Then it's no wonder that it said "invalid format" because you can install GTK themes with Gnome control center.
Ehm... so, install the Sawfish themes like it says in the link that I mentioned.
If you download GTK themes, install them with Gnome control center.
Confusing, yes I know, but you get used to it. :)

4) A snazzy little app called "GTop" will tell you how much free disk space you have, as well as a wealth of other things. Another one of my favs is "Gkrellm"...beautiful utility, and if you configure the latest version you can get a meter on it that tells you how much free disk space you have.

as for putting you panel where you want it everytime you start up, put it the place you want it, then logout and click the save scession box, then the next time you logion all should be exactly as you left it.

Thats the thing I dont understand. That site keeps referring to Sawmill, what is that? Also, how do I tell what version of Sawfish I have on my computer? I see that the themes have version numbers by them. Thanks alot for your help.
Also, when u say install GTK themes, what do I do to install? Just pick install new theme, and select the tarball? Sorry--I'm just kinda new to all this.

That's the way it's done with the KDE Theme Manager. Could be the same for Gnome. Give it a try and see if it works.
If Sawfish was installed by rpm's, then try 'rpm -q sawfish' and see if it lists the installed rpm with the version.

Sawfish was previously called Sawmill. So, they're the same thing, I guess...
