Use Eterm. Check the man page for it. Generally it's Eterm --trans but there are more options available to you including shading, coloring, etc.

Eterm -O --cmod 96 will produce a nice transparent tinted term. the "-O" is an oh..not a zero.

the "96" defines how much tinting to apply. the lower the number, the darker the tint.

Um wait, did you type ETERM or Eterm? It should be Eterm. If that was the case, it should be on one of your CDs, install it from there.

It isn't necessarily installed by default. Anyway, if you can't get it off the CD, you can get it from Mandrake's ftp site or from rpmfind.net.

Edit: Here is the rpmfind.net site with it- http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/mandrake/8.1/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/Eterm-O.8.10-17mdk.i586.html
