anyone know of a wm that is small (like blackbox) and yet is relatively feature rich and easy to use?

yes...it must be user-friendly. I just tried out ion and, well, let's just say that it was rather frustrating to open it up and have no user menus of any sort or any templates to make them with.

any more minimal than bb and I may not be too interested in it.

IceWM - It is IMHO as good if not better than Blackbox :D

cool! :)

I just downloaded, compiled, and installed it. It kicks arse! :D

only one thing, though...how do I configure it? it didn't make a .icewm directory in ~, nor did it make any rc files (as far as I can tell)... and www.icewm.org (http://www.icewm.org) is down at the moment.

Theres a nice little program called "iceme" that you can download, It lets you configure IceWM with a GUI.

You could try Sawfish: light like IceWM and configurable like Enlightenment.

can I use it without GNOME? I'd really prefer to avoid using something that takes a long time to load up.

and icewm is very, very nice, btw. I just went through the preferences file and customized things to my liking...grabbed a theme (Pure95; a win95 lookalike)...and now, well, it looks like what I wish windows was more like. heh. the menu handling, the desktop management, and just about everything on here is absolutely incredible (and fast! it's just about as fast as anything on blackbox...).

that BSD 'start' button is 1337. :D

I changed the theme to the xp one...there was just something about that win9x theme that seemed to beg me to change it. it was probably the fact that the toolbar at the bottom looked like a pile of fecal matter.
