What is the best window manager that isn't loaded with all sorts of stuff like background configuration tools and panels and such.

I am running gnome on my debian box. what are my options?

I am currently running an old version of sawfish (so old that it is called sawmill)
<tangent>
that is the only real downside to debian that I have found so far...lots of the packages, even in the testing archive are very out of date.
</tangent>

so yeah....what should I use?

thanks

blackbox
fvwm2
flwm
lwm (caveat - "There's no configurability either: if you want that, you want a
different window manager")

In response to your tangent - have you run an apt-get update? I have sawfish 0.35-1 available to me via apt-get.

ion and pwm are both VERY little.

I found a window manager once that was SMALL THAN XTERM. But I can't find the URL anymore http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

D'you run testing? If so, would you mind showing us your sources.list?

wm2 -- it's so minimalistic that you won't even believe it!
Blackbox -- that's what I recommend.

wmHardRock, yes I run unstable - http://www.geocities.com/djdipaolo/sources.list.html (it's basically Craig's list, with stuff commented out)

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

that is my sources.list file. I don't want to have to go with the unstable archive and sacrifice stability, but I really want the licq and sawfish packages from the unstable archive.....how can I do this?

Just copy my list from the page I linked above, but comment out (add a # to the front of) the lines that have unstable. There are already plenty of lines commented out anyway.

Well.....I copied your sources.list file.

I just selected all the packages....time to install

hope this doesn't break a lot of stuff

Unstable will break alot of stuff. Install testing. Dont believe me? Go look at the news on debian.org.. 1-9-01 - Lilo is badly broken due to new package maintainer

There are alot of other broken stuff I have ran into, especially perl. Dont say you wernt warned.

I don't believe you. I've been running unstable with no problems whatsoever for quite a while. Granted, I will have to go and tell it to install a new package every now and then to satisfy a new dependency (I don't think apt-get upgrade will automatically download dependencies, it just seems to hold those packages back), but other than that it has ran perfectly.

Last time I used unstable, I had couples of problems that I didn't know how to fix:
-Couples of packages that weren't properly installed (due to a broken debconf-tiny)
-Perl was very buggy. prenvented me from using adduser. And when I tried to upgrade, didn't work because of a Perl problem.

I remember this summer was paradise: I was running unstable (Craig's list) and everything was so stable. Never had any stability problems. Nostalgy...

When was the last time, Strike, did you do a fresh install? I assume that is what this guy is doing, and I have installed more than any other person in the world in the past 3 weeks.. trust me..

Last fresh install I did was actually mid-December (maybe late December). I'm actually exaggerating, because I do remember that I basically had to go in and hand-fix one or two of the postinst or preinst scripts for certain packages (just looking at the "broken" packages and figuring out what was wrong was all it took). But, other than that it's been smooth sailing - especially for the last few weeks.

Blackbox or icewm. Icewm is a little nicer, but is a real pain to configure. Blackbox was almost as nice, and was a lot easier to configure IMO.

check this:
http://www.plig.org/xwinman/

There is another list of managers if you click on Others.

xfce is getting better with every release, it is different, but you get used to anything after a time.

xfce
was developed with glade and for
precisely your type of needs.
(using glade, it is more than GNOME
comapatable!)

good luck!

blackbox might be the one you're looking for... why don't you try it?

I use windowmaker on my p-150 with 48mb of RAM, and a vid card that has only 512k of video RAM. Hums along just fine for me.

An interesting thing to try is XFCE w/out the panel; technically just XFWM. Quite a unique experience!

 icewm

Light weight, all configs are in text files. Really powerful, I espically like the command bar in the taskbar when its set to doubleheight. www.icewm.org (http://www.icewm.org)

I second icewm. It's extremely tiny, but it works great.
