Hi there!

Stupid question- but I'm on a severe learning curve with Debian2.2r2 (but a fun one ;-) How do I change from Windowmaker to "just" GNOME in Debian? Do I need to add an x.session file to my home directory and use the exec gnome command in there, or am I missing some components I should have installed using dselect?

Also, can I go ahead and load in Helix Gnome? I've already got Sawfish on but the GNOME control panel won't let me "choose" it to change too; it says it's currently selected, but when I try and change back it won't let me? Any ideas?

What of KDE2.0 in Debian? Does it work? My search of the Debian mailing list archives proved to be inconclusive- I'd just like to know what my options are as I try out this distro.

Thanks ahead of time, and if anyone is curious about Debian- just give it a go!! It's not that hard :-)

i just recently installed deb2.2r2 and did the helix gnome thing.

all i did to get gnome going was edit ~/.xinitrc and added 'exec gnome-session' (w/o the ''s)

hope that helps

Thanks! That did it all right. Now, I just need to get GNOME to run a bit "smaller" :-)

Increase your resolution. xf86config should do it just fine for you... or you could edit your XF86Config file.

Hey there- thanks. I read the man pages etc for the xf86 file, and tried to change the resolution that way, but nothing has changed thus far. I have a CTX 17" USB Monitor that I normally run MDk in 1280x1024 mode- so I'll keep trying!

Thanks for the advice though!

I'm not in GNOME now but its something similar to this.

-> Right click on an icon in the panel.

-> Panel -> properties -> all properties

-> panel size : set to whatever you want. Small, tiny, huge, rediculous....

Actually, according to the X docs, you should use ~/.xsession, as that's garunteed to be read properly by all different methods of starting up X.

Yep- I bought a copy of "Learning Debian/GNU Linux" so that I could use some documentation and study things a bit further and it seems that the actual command should be to move to the /etc/X11 directory and use:

cp Xsession Xsession.SAVE

And then to edit the Xsession file so that it contains something like window-manager & (FVWm, IceWM etc) in the fourth line. I haven't done this yet, but intend to. I'd like to install Helix-GNOME first with the Sawmill Window Manager- but I'll see how brave I feel :-)

Thanks for the input though- it's always saved and kept for reference, so any help/advice is appreciated!!
