Hi everyone,

I have mandrake 8 installed on my Pentium 200mmx (oc-ed to 262mhz) and with 32mb of EDO ram. I have learned a lot out of this piece of old junk, but still it runs pretty well.

I have used x-windows manager KDE/Gnome, but they are all too slow for me.
Which x-windows manager would have the smallest appetite for my already obsolete, and depleted 32mb of EDO ram (running at 60ns, and that is a joke compare to today's standard).

*want to be more productive on my linux box without waiting 1.5 minutes for my Konqueror to start.

*also, can anyone verify that linux os would run faster on all pcs, compared to windows?
I am currently dualbooting, windows 98 and mdk 8, I find win98 so must faster, why?

welcome to all inputs.
dave.

from my experience BlackBox seems to be the fastest/smoothest running Window Manager of the newer ones out there. If you include the older ones, then it'd have to be a tossup between FVWM (and all of it's variants) and Blackbox. FVWM even has variants that resemble Win9X for those of you that like that desktop look

does mandrake 8 come with black box?

Because Mandrake is ungodly slow without a good deal of tweaking. Even on newer hardware it's still rather slow.

RAM is the cheapest that it's ever been... I would suggest dropping $100 and getting a lot more RAM.

As for a light window manager, I would probably say blackbox has worked the best for me when I needed something small. If you're looking for a faster web browser, Linux really doesn't have much. I use mozilla.

window manager - IceWm
web browser - Opera or w3m

get more RAM, blackbox is faster and comes with mandrake 8.0..
to use blackbox, make a file in your /home directory (under your nickname...) called .xinitrc and add
exec blackbox
to it..
then type startx

mandrake 8.0 blows.
but if you insist on running it, turn off ALL unneeded services and daemons..
as well, look up some 'How-To's for tweaking mandrake...
some of them will not work with specific hardware, but most will...
you'll be able to get mandrake within 40-60% as fast as slackware on that hardware (i have p200mmx with 128 megs RAM) with a LOT of tweaking... with 32MB of ram, you'll want a big swap space, and you'll want to tweak your HD... there's an NHF for this, and it works great...

hdparm -t /dev/hda (read the NHF to tweak this)

I like window maker quite a bit. You can move windows around by holding alt then left clicking. Can't do that with most wm's.
You'll find out how important that is eventually. I also like blackbox and icewm.
They kick *** as well. And yah, the 32 megs has got to be increased. at www.computersurplusoutlet.com (http://www.computersurplusoutlet.com) they have the right kind of edo ram for your system.
You have to get two sticks at a time. They have 64 and 32 meg sticks for something like 30 and 40 dollars a piece. Pretty good deal, but not outstanding.
You can get blackbox from http://blackbox.alug.org/
It installs quickly and easily on a stock
mandrake 6.1 install, so it should work fine
for your cituation.
After its installed you can have it started
up when you startx by making a regular
text file (name it .xinitrc) and putting
this in it: blackbox

yep thats it. Save the file as .xinitrc
and put it in your home directory.
Thats it. If it doesn't work then you're ****
out of luck as far as I can help.

1. (derision deleted)

2. If you want to find out which is faster, the only logical thing to do next would be to download some kind of a testing program for this, or just running one program, noting the results in top and ps, then running the other prog and comparing the results.

3. KDE and GNOME are not window managers, but are a collection of desktop programs and small servers. While KDE does have kwin / kdewin which is a window manager, KDE is not a window manager, nor is GNOME. I dont know if GNOME even has an official window manager to use or not yet.

4. (more derision deleted, even though it's not bad advice and it is in half-jest)

Really I think it is a toss-up between WindowMaker and BlackBox. Window Maker is pretty fast, but it isn't as pretty as the other ones out there. Blackbox can look pretty and be fast -=)

OH! I forgot to mention my very favourite wm: GNU Screen (http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/screen.html)

Murdock</STRONG>You got that right ,HMM. :D It's easier to setup/configure than BB, TWM, or any other lightweight WM. I remember reading this thread just before I started a LFS a few days ago. For some reason, at the time, I couldn't remember why I chose XFce as the WM. Now that I read this thread again, I know why I chose XFce. I didn't know why I wanted XFce, all I knew is I wanted it....bad. :D After the long hours of compiling and creating startup scripts, I was on auto pilot and somehow XFce magicly showed itself on the screen.
