Can someone please explain to me or point me in the direction of an explanation of how x works? I'd like to know the components that comprise it and how they fit together. What I think I understand so far is that there is a basic protocol that drives x called "xfree86" which is kind of lays the ground work for the system. Then comes the "x server" which communicates directly with the hardware. Then comes the "x client" which interfaces with the software/desktop (I'm not sure if the client is actually called the "window manager"?), and then finally the "desktop", like "gnome" for example which is an add-on for the window manager that is more or less just for looks? The reason I'm trying to understand this is because I'd like to know what the required components of "X" are and which ones are required and do I have a choice in installing/upgrading them... Hope this makes sense. I'm sorry if this topic has been covered somewhere but I've tried for a few days to hammer this one down without luck. Thanks in advance.....
