So somehow I managed to screw up my user settings on KDE so that I can't ever get past the starting up screen. It's not wiped out, becuase I can still run it as root (what I'm doing now) but if I run it as my usual login, it chokes. It dies starting up the DCOP server, but I've reinstalled my qt stuff, no difference. Is there a way I can reset my KDE stuff to default from the command line? Thanx in advance for your advice.

I think you can just copy the KDE config files from your root home directory over the ones in your user home directory.

Two things you can try.
1. Copy all personal stuff to /home/temp. Then delete <user> thats you! Then delete /home/<user>. Now add <user> back. Now boot into KDE and login as user and all should be OK. You can copy back all your personal files back but remember do not allow it to overwrite any files files while copying or you could be putting bad files back into your directory.
2. Backup your files as in 1 above. Delete /home/<user> now copy /etc/skel to new /home/<user> as root chown all files back to <user>:<user> in /home/<user> (recursively).
<edit> now as in 1 above you can copy your personal settings back but do not overwrite any files.</edit>
I know 1 above works because I've screwed KDE up too. 2. Should work and I'll try it that way the next time I screw up KDE. But I spend so much time in iceWM now I hardly use KDE anymore.

ouch that's a bit drastic isn't it I would just suggest deleting .kde from your user account then start X as the user and you should have the default kde back and start configuring agian.

I agree with Xsecrets, you'll be wasting your time deleting users. I've screwed up KDE many times and that's the best way to fix it.
