I just downloaded Ximian Gnome 1.4 and I was wondering how to add menu items to the menu at the top. Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the menu at the top" but Gnome has a Menu Editor located under Programs > Settings > Menu Editor in the "Gnome Foot" menu.

You have the Gnome User's Guide is on your machine here:

/usr/share/gnome/help/gnome-users-guide/C/index.html

The menu editor will edit the "favorites" section of the menu easily, but I haven't been able to edit some portions

I don't have the "foot" menu. I only have the menu at the top like an Apple computer. It has a yellow Ximian symbol followed by Programs, System, and Help. I cannot find the menu editor on any of the menus.

You will have to create an edge panel and add stuff to it to have that. Or, open a terminal window and type the command doorman-reset. When you log back into x the next time, the doorman will run, like a wizard in the Windows OS and allow you to setup your panels, etc.

If you want to just use the menu editor, you can click system->run and enter gmenu, then click run.

Another way: open an xterminal and type gmenu <enter>.
