Whenever I try to run applications that need root-access, KDE prompts me to type the password for root. When I do that, nothing happens, the applications doesn't start. Any ideas?

Open an xterm first then at command prompt type kpackage. It will ask for root password and then you will get some feedback in the xterm window which will probably be helpful. Anytime you have problems with a GUI app you should start it in a terminal to get feedback from the program. justlinux.com
