I'm really stuck trying to set up Xwindows on my new machine.
It just won't work with my onboard graphics card.
I'm using a PC-Chips Mboard with onboard graphics (actually onboard pretty much everything..)
Windows detects the chipset as Sis630/730.
X-Configurator can't do anything with it and SuperProbe can only tell me its a SiS but doesn't know what chipset (and reports 0 ram)
Help!

Have you tried running /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config? It doesn't do as much for you as Xconfigurator in the way of probing for stuff so you'll have to select more of your hardware manually. Be sure to have your monitor's horizontal and vertical refresh rates handy because you'll get asked to supply them.
Also you might want to back up your /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] file as well.

Could it have anything to do with the version of XFree86 I'm using? I think its quite an old one (CD it's of off was brought end of '99). I've just checked on the XWin Website and they mention SiS630 support with 3.3.6
Would that resolve the problem?
If so how do I go about downloading? There's so many files Is it not possible to download one file with them all compressed together?

There are 12 mandatory files you need to download.
1. Xinstall.sh The installer script
2. extract The utility for extracting tarballs
3. Xbin.tgz X clients/utilities and run-time libraries
4. Xlib.tgz Some data files required at run-time
5. Xman.tgz Manual pages
6. Xdoc.tgz XFree86 documentation
7. Xfnts.tgz Base set of fonts
8. Xfenc.tgz Base set of font encoding data
9. Xetc.tgz Run-time configuration files
10. Xvar.tgz Run-time data
11. Xxserv.tgz XFree86 X server
12. Xmod.tgz XFree86 X server modules
The rest are optional.
NOTE: Download the extract script into a separate directory then copy it into the install directory. My extract kept getting corrupted and I would have to download it again till I did this, then I could just copy it.

I think you can just download the source files. There are only three of them there. I'm downloading the third now so i can see if i can get kde2 to work. i dont know if it makes a difference, but it seems easier than downloading all the files. well if it doesn't work i'll let you know :)

If you're upgrading to a newer version of XFree86, you will need the 12 files.
