I just know some of you are going to get tired of me real soon...

Now that I have a better understanding of DE's and WM's (meaning, I know now that they aren't the same thing). I have a couple more questions:

1) Is a DE necessary for Xwindows?
2) What are the reasons for and against using a WM with a DE (since I've heard a couple people say that they don't use a WM)?

1. A de isn't necesarry, a wm is though.
2. A de always uses a wm, KDE for example kwin & gnome sawfish (by default, this can be changed though) and I don't know what wm xfce uses, probably it's own. A wm without a de is possible though, like for example icewm, windowmaker, e, bb, fb,...

Joeri made a really nice exaplanation about this in this forum, I'll search it and post it if/when I find it.

DE's are slow and most wm's are quick. fluxbox and window maker are quick, easy, and efficient.
