I use Enlightenment as my preferred wm. In fact, my laptop is so slow that I find no need to wait around for KDE and GNOME. However, I did have one small question:

Several programs are written with one of these 2 environments in mind (i.e. KOffice, Nautilus). Do these programs suffer when run under e? Are they even stable?

Thanks for the help!

As long as you have, at the very least, the gnome and kde libraries installed, the programs will run fine.

I did encounter a font bug when running KOffice from under Gnome, in which all the fonts would show up as Helvetica - but that doesn't happen now that I'm in fluxbox.

Supposedly, kde or Gnome programs take longer to load when you're not running kde or Gnome, but I've found they load faster without all the overhead of those desktop managers.

As was previously mentioned, with the appropriate libraries installed, I have yet to have a problem running any KDE or GNOME app under Enlightenment. In fact, unless I am mistaken, prior to Sawfish, many distributions (i.e., Mandrake, Redhat, etc.) were shipping with Enlightenment setup as the window manager for GNOME. I am not saying that you will never encounter some screwy app that just does not work correctly. Instead, I suspect that you will have very little trouble running KDE or GNOME apps under Enlightenment. :D

OK, here's a related question that I have yet to find an answer to:

I edited my Applications menu last night using menuconf, and the additions I made never showed up in my e menu. Also, some of my KDE- or GNOME-specific apps are missing from the menu in e, even though they show up in both environments. Any ideas about where to add these?

(I've looked in ~/.enlightenment, but the only menu to edit there is the e settings menu.)

I suspect that what you might have done is edit menu items for the KDE panel menu (or perhaps the GNOME panel menu, I forget). In any event, this will not change the Enlightenment menu. There are text files that require modification when it is desired that the Enlightenment menus be updated. I am not currently at home and my memory is not what it once was. Subsequently, I am not able to provide you with the specifics. I suggest that you take a look in your ~/.enlightenment directory for the relative menu files. Once the changes have been made, the menus are updated by running Generate Menus utility which is found in what I call the Enlightenment System Menu. I know that I have probably confused you. Sorry about that. If you are not able to discern the pertinent information regarding Enlightenment menus, please let me know and once I return to my Linux box I will provide you any of the details that you might require.

After having re-read your post, I think that I may have provided information to which you were already privy. What distribution are you using? Perhaps you need to copy the Enlightenment apps menu to your ~/.enlightenment directory, and then edit.

Do not forget to regenerate the menus (I think I called it generate in my previous post. Now I am confused. :D It has been a while since I have played with Enlightenment. I currently have been playing with other window managers. I know what they say about excuses...but it was the only one I could think of in the spur of the moment.
