Using the net in Gnome

I have just recently got the internet to work in Gnome, However when I connect using CHAP aucentication, no other programs will load while I am connected. The programs that are already loaded work fine but I just cant load any new ones. As you can probably tell this is highly annoying!!

Any ideas would be much appreciated..
