Do you guys use them? When I first started with Linux, my initial thought was, "Oooh, neat! ... But why?" They came in handy once in a while, but I only ever kept one spare around, doing virtually all my work on my main desktop.

That has changed, though. Since I began working at my current job, I've had to have several different sets of tasks I work on at a time. I now usually have 4-7 windows open on each of 4, and I'm considering adding another if things get any more chaotic than they already are. Dang, they're nice to have!

So tell me, do you guys use virtual desktops?

I usually use around 4, though that is changing now that I have dual displays :) :)

Usually no, but on some special projects I use 2. If window management starts to take a little bit too much time, I quickly switch over to using ratpoison.

When I'm compiling 3 different sets of code, I like to have each one running in it's own VD( :)) I usualy only use 2 at a time, but they are very nice to have...keeps things a little neater, easier on the eyes.

I'm running 6 VDs right now.. they really are a godsend.

One for browsers, one for mail and newsgroups, one for instant messenging stuff and mucking, one for miscellaneous stuff like writing stories and articles, one for The Gimp (which is very useful since I don't want to have to minimize all those little windows), one for system maintenance and updating... etc. Everything is nice and organized. ^_^

I abuse the hell out of every WM feature E has just about. Window-shading: use it all the time. Sticky windows: great for IM windows when you are waiting for a response, among many other things. Pager: great for dragging windows from one viewport of the virtual desktop to another. Iconbox: great for stashing apps that you want to set aside for now but have available to look at whenever you want to check (great for wget sessions, check the window when gkrellm shows eth0 is no longer pegged, and see if it finished or stalled; also great for compile sessions or cvs updates). Edge flipping: great for flipping between desktops quickly without having to use the keyboard. Window groups: great for keeping related apps together (apps like GIMP use them intelligently).

I've only ever used them a couple of times. When one gets mucked up due to a runaway process, I'll switch over to another one to open a terminal and clean house. I never saw another reason to use them (I even removed all but 2 from KDE to make more room in the taskbar).

Now that I've read all of your posts, I see how handy they can be!
