Max Strike 03-11-2002, 06:26 AM Why are you logging into Gnome as root? There's no (good) reason to. maxpublic 03-11-2002, 03:31 PM Your response has nothing to do with my question. Are you capable of providing an answer? z0mbix 03-11-2002, 03:46 PM Sorry, don't know the answer, but I think Strike was meaning that there is no reason to use root to login to a window manager as you can use su and sudo from your normal account This will save you alot of time too. :) maxpublic 03-11-2002, 04:18 PM I have my reasons for doing so. Primarily I'm curious about a few things - like why no one, as yet, has been able to answer this question, elsewhere and now here. It should be a simple thing, really. Jomboni 03-11-2002, 06:38 PM You have to be root to edit your Gnome menus - good reason #1. Jomboni 03-11-2002, 06:39 PM Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to your question - but I've never gotten warnings from logging in to Gnome as root. Strike 03-11-2002, 06:53 PM Originally posted by Jomboni: You have to be root to edit your Gnome menus - good reason #1. This is not a reason to run gnome itself as root. This is what su is for. maxpublic there may or may not be a way to disable the warning messages, but did you ever think that they are there for a reason? And that if they wanted just to tell you "hey, make sure you know what you are doing", don't you think they'd tell you how to disable the warning messages at the end of the warnings? If you can give me a valid reason for running gnome as root, I'll back off, but I'm rather secure in my initial statement. maxpublic 03-11-2002, 07:06 PM The question is one of technical interest and has no need to be justified. Trying to engender a debate on a non-topic is just plain silly and one I'll firmly ignore. The 'why' here isn't at all important. It's the 'how'. The GNOME warnings are most likely controlled by a simple on-off switch that depends on whether or not you log in as root. The question is: "where is the switch?" So far no one on any forum, here or elsewhere, has been able to answer the question. I find this blazingly odd; Linux is a system that lends itself to absolute control, regardless of the wisdom of that control - meaning that there should be an easier way to disable the warnings than hacking the GNOME code.
