can it be done? I don't see a point to having it around if I'm using other things to get around.

Just incase anyone wanted to know how I did it...

create ~/.xinitrc and execute your window manager.
my xinitrc file contains the following string:

exec blackbox

now gnome doesn't load and I can get around via blackbox http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
