Hello all,
I'm a Win98 user ready to switch . . . however, I need to start slowly. I have a Cryix 233 processor w/ a 2.5GB HD. I also have a 2nd older 1.6GB HD. I'd like to install Linux on my 1.6GB drive w/ a dual boot option so I can still access the other drive w/ Win98. Can I? What's my 1st step? Should I just look for an "installfest" to help me out? Thanks for any tips . . .

i installed linux for about a month ago. i still use w98 in the same computer. it's a really easy thing to do, to get the computer boot with linux and windows. just edit /etc/lilo.conf a bit and that's it. see "man lilo.conf" after you've installed linux.
at least i did the thing this way:
i put the linux hard disk to be slave and windows disk to be master, so that i could boot into linux with a boot disk and easily to windows. then i just defined a new image in /etc/lilo.conf somewhat like this:
umm...
other = /dev/hda1
label = windows
table = /dev/hda1
i'm not sure it went absolutely this way, look for better assistance with man-pages and stuff.

Norcal...try this link:

It's a simple step-by-step for setting up a dual boot box.
Good luck & welcome to Linux! http://www.linuxplanet.com/discussion/biggrin.gif

Hello again,
Unfortunately I haven't been able to use your tips for a dual boot yet . . .I'm still stuck on the install. I bought Caldera's OpenLinux 2.2. I have my 1.6gb HD w/ FAT32 setup. When I try to partition it for Linux, it's says there isn't enough room (it's empty-except for Win98's recycle bin). I thought I didn't need to partition it since I have 2 separate HDs. Thanks for your help (again). I'm going to keep tinkering . . .

You're going to need to delete the partition altogether, then create a Linux (ext2) partition.
After you've deleted the FAT32 partition on your secondary hard disc, watch out for Win98 failing to boot.
I went through a similar series of steps, where I put a secondary 1.6Gb disc into my Win98 PC which was formatted with some FAT partitions. When I deleted those partitions with FDISK so that it was blank, Windows would lock during its startup sequence.
In the end I had to boot Windows into command line mode and create a small FAT partition so Win98 would start up properly. To my shame, Ive never dared delete it for fear that Windows will throw a wobbly again and not boot up...
