I'm looking for some advice.

I'm a fan of blackbox. I have a new debian box that I want to try compiling blackbox with KDE support for the icons.(sounds cool)
My first attempt at installing KDE using apt-get from the unstable source didn't work.

Has anyone else installed KDE using apt-get?

Reading the kde page, it says to load kde-support first, I can't find it in the package listing.

I can do this from scratch, the old fashioned way, but apt-get is usually the best way to go.(yes, spoiled)

Will compiling blackbox with kde support cause blackbox to lose it's quickness and appeal?

Any input from those that have gone before me would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I think you do:
# apt-get install task-kde

Are you saying that "apt-get install task-kde" will do a full install?

Anyone else installed KDE on their Debian system using apt-get?

I want to benefit from your experience.

I think so, but I'm not sure because I haven't installed kde myself yet. I'm waiting for KDE2. But I seem to recall that debian uses task-something packages sometimes. Like task-helix-gnome installs the whole helix-gnome package. I think I read somewhere that task-kde installs the whole kde package. But I can't garantee it.

check the debian website. go to packages, and search for kde. it'll list the exact package name. and you can then apt-get that. it'll be in nonfree or somthing.

I've got kind of a work around... dist-upgrade to woody and then apt-get install kdebase - it'll give you kde2 and konqueror (very nice, too). To dist-upgrad to woody at this line to your sources.list:

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian woody main contrib non-free

Then do an apt-get update to be able to dist-upgrade.

PS upgrading to woody from potato will take hours even on a fast connection, especially if you have a particularly bulky install.
