to dignify that article with a response would be to imply that anything the author said was correct.
how can open source and linux NOT be here in the next year, or 5 years? that's like saying the BSDs will go belly up because "there isn't enough desktop software"...
it's difficult to formulate an intelligent response to that article...simply because there really isn't one; my IQ dropped 20 points just reading it.

i can't form any coherent thoughts at the moment.
quote "We’re no longer talking about when Open Source and Linux will replace Microsoft but whether Linux and Open Source will even be around after Microsoft releases Windows XP."
instead of ranting, i will just say, you are wrong, plain and simple, you are wrong
the dumb massess will continue to buy pc's preloaded with whatever the latest MS flavor is, but others, after seeing all the choices, will be open to alternatives
linux won't replace windows becuase it SHOULDN'T, replace windows. they both do different things well. both will continue to exist for a very long time (apple's still around, right?)

That guy has absolutely no intelligence if he honestly believes what he wrote. The very fact that he tried to compare win2k as a better overall OS then linux is ridiculous.
Furthermore, he shouldn't be allowed on the internet. Ignorant people trying to spread their BS need to be executed. Or at least have their ISP priveleges revoked.

I think we have Microsoft and AOL to blame for bringing all these lusers to the world wide web :mad:

Just think, people spend all that effort trying to keep people from genetic engineering babies to be smarter, and this guy's the poster child for why it needs to be done. :)
I know we're not supposed to dignify articles like this with clicks, or a response, but this one was so bad, and so misinformed, to not respond is a disservice to the entire community. As linux users fighting the "nobody uses it" illusion, showing that there are enough of us to make a serious dent in this magazines credibility is one of the first steps to ridding annoying pieces like this. When an author is so misinformed, he or she needs feedback from those who know. Of course, that not being an excuse, it's also nice to make sure that his readers know better as well.

I find it funny how soon they forget that the Melissa Virus, and other viruses like it crippled networks around the world for days, even weeks in some places.
I find it funny how these networks were powered by MS software. But the systems that were ran on Linux/Unix were unaffected.
How soon they forget that they've accepted the notion that rebooting a computer due to lockups is just "normal".
Indeed.

I found this in the Windows XP source.
LOCK ALL;
SELECT * FROM YOUR.OS;
MS has the technology to offer OS's under a subscription plan. That means you LEASE the software and must make payments on it. The only thing stopping them is Linux.

Hmmm... where's the rest of the article?!?! :confused:
Looked to me like the "author" just made a bunch of baseless accusations and then ended abruptly? I don't know.. He runs win2k so linux is obsolete?!?! Yeah... whatever...

"Non calor sed umor est qui nobis incommodat"
not to be a dork, but would you mind translating this for me? I'm guessing it's latin, but I can't really make heads or tails of it... (sorry, blame the American educational system, and blame the Catholic church for losing its way)

At first I'm thinking, "Hmm, perhaps there's an intelligent response," but then I read the article... Ahh, just Linux bashing with no real reasons nor a conclusion. My speech teacher would say he made a bad argument (not to say my speech teacher is much smarter than him, but she is a little). I could certainly think of some of the hype provided by Linux in the past year, but nothing of what he said (everyone repeat after me, "In-drem-ma").

Well, i just dont think linus created linux with the intention to replace anybody. He created it because he had a dream. And millions of people around the globe have worked together to make this dream harder, better, faster, stronger . :D
'nuff said.

Its really obvious that linux isn't going anywhere. I think Mr. Ko who imho looks like he is running out of material to write about for Linux. Basically how is Linux or open source going to die when the MAJORITY of the SERVER MARKET depends on it?!
Windows is great for dekstop (arguably), but for server it flat out sucks. You need 2-3 boxes to = one Linux box in performance.

The more I think about the article, the more I think he may have proved his point. You see, the article was badly written, lacking intelligence, and well... down-right stupid. How did that prove his point... Well, if this is what tech "writers" are coming too.... then obviously computer users in general are going to be really stupid and therefore barely able to grasp XP.
:rolleyes:

well, that just means that the BSD and Linux users will be ruling the world in 2015... :D
perhaps this is God's way of filtering out the weak and stupid ("we need AOL to connect to the internet" "what is a skipt kiddie?" "what is a firewall/anti-virus program?" "MicroSoft 'experts' can do our jobs for us if we have enough money...we don't need to learn how to run 'our' own software!"). In another 10 years, if all the Linux and BSD gurus moved to Washington, engaged in a coup d`e'tat with the current political leaders, and started reorganizing things, the world would probably be a better place (if they don't destroy MicroSoft, then they should all get paddled severely) :D

...let's face it, Linux is never going to replace Windows...
Who said that?! There is absolutely no bases for that idea. There was some hope that maybe it might, but we all knew that was a long shot that's not worth aiming for. If that were the case, NeXT would have taken over a long time ago.
my take on the whole ms .net and product authorization scheme has to do with ms's inability to patch and/or provide secure services. they can't fix it so they are going to i.d. all their users so they can stop security breaches by identifing and prosecuting the culprits.
it's the only way they can maintaine security for their products. the threat of disclure and prosecution will be ms's solution to all their present and future security issue's.
it's sad but ms's seems to be forcing hardware manufacturers and suppliers to go along with them.
