Here (http://www2.linuxjournal.com/lj-issues/issue61/2902.html) is a link explaining a buffer overflow (and another (http://www.cse.ogi.edu/DISC/projects/immunix/StackGuard/usenixsc98_html/node3.html#SECTION00020000000000000000). Libsafe intercepts C function calls that can cause such conditions and diverts them to a "smart" alternative library which check for this condition.
