Anybody tried this one yet? Im lookin for something with minimal features, just somethin with only what I need and not 700MB's of useless programs. Small and fast is what I want.

Peanut sounds cool, or maybe coyote linux.

Opinions?

I've used Peanut before, support is done by forum (pretty good), there are a lot of packaged ports for it, based on slackware, pretty uptodate. I recommend it. Go for it CRT. ;)

Peanut Rocks. Small download, X, PPP, network, etc. without the extra bloat that comes with just about any other distro. How many text editors do you really need?

And since it is Slackware based, you can add packages you need from linuxmafia or a Slack cd.

I want to try Peanut but I can't seem to find an ISO image. I went to www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) and cant seem to get a good connection anywhere to get it. All I'm able to find are .bz2 files. Is this what I need to install it?

Best case scenario is burn an ISO image and just boot from CD. Can I do that with Peanut or do I need to do some kind of funky floppy install?

Thanks for the responses. ;)

Peanut Linux is OK but there are two things that I didn't like:

1/ the setup is mono-partition only. No way to put /usr, /home, ... on a separate partition.

2/ It defaults to KDE, non-optional. So, it is not a bloat-free distro IMHO.

I think that debian ;) is closer to the bloat-free idea. Just install base package, apt-get xwindows core and only the apps you need. You can even do it on a 56k without spending more than 2-3 hours online for a basic setup.

Zipslack is fine too. But you have to "transplant" it yourself on ext2 partitions to get the best of it.

Just my opinion,

Pierre

By the way: http://www.ibiblio.org/peanut/cdrom.htm to get the cdrom. It is bootable.

Or check out Vector (http://www.ibiblio.org/vectorlinux). Similar design, but uses IceWM as default and has optional packages for for othe Window Managers.

I've been considering it as well. There are easy workarounds for the above... definitly not a deal-breaker. IMO, wmaker or bb would have made more sense though.

I recommend it. I'm running peanut8.3 on 133Mzh CPU, 48M ram. COOL! You only need to download peanut.zip and peanut.bz2 . <only 50M> it includes kde,xmms,... and you can download packages from Peanut and it is easy to install <only one click at mc>.
Try it! :D

CRT: check out the home page www.ibiblio.org/peanut (http://www.ibiblio.org/peanut.) They may have a link to the iso on their home page.

I have been using peanut since 7.7
get the 8.1 iso, www.ibiblio.org/peanut (http://www.ibiblio.org/peanut)
I also use other managers it is simple
enough to kill KDE and replace it with
one of the others, i have used fvwm95
and xfce, and there are plenty of alternatives. To wipe a package, install
the "packages" package with mc, that
loads the list of installed packages into
/var/log/packages. then you can kill
anything you dont want.

I use a cut down peanut 8.1 as a firewall,
and i have several partitions mounted
noexec, nosuid. e.g. var and tmp so there
are no limits there. I have also installed
quotas. & i run nfs as the need arises.

All in all peanut is great, and the fixes
are out fast. The downside is you may strike
a release which is a bit unstable. So go
get a 8.1 iso, they are still listed on
some of the mirror sites.

I have also tried coyote, it was ok, but
peanut is more complete. Peanut from the small iso lacks a compiler and docs, if you need one you get it from the large iso, or
from a mirror. the large iso is the one
you can boot with.

Of course I am using peanut on my desktop
too. I am one of those who dont have any
need for M$ therefore it is not.

I tried Peanut. It's neat but puny. If you want to do anything useful with it, you have to add packages. By the time you've added the packages you need, you've got a sizeable distro.

Why not install Mandrake 7.2 with just the packages you need? You can even install it on a Windows directory if you want.
