I'm using RedHat 7.1 and I periodically run the RH Update Software (checks their website for updates). Works pretty well (as far as I can tell). One thing that it comes up with for an update is the kernel itself. Is it safe to use the RH updater to do a kernel update? If so, are there any known issues to watch out for, or do you just check the boxes and continue? I've been too scared to install those updates, the others worked fine, but I didn't want to mess with the kernel.

Well I don't know how good it is... but if you want to have custom stuff in there like ide-scsi simulation + iptables +usb support, you end up recompiling anyway.
On the other hand if those options are already included in your kernel image, and you don't need them, it would make your kernel unnecessarely bigger.
And another point, if you ever switch to another distro that doesn't have options like this, you're ****ed and have to learn it anyway.
I'd say, go for the kernel from kernel.org
download the newest rpm for the kernel frpm their rawhide ftp site, and just do rpm -ivh. then edit lilo.conf and it will work just fine. then you still have the old one too. easier then going the long way and compiling it yourself.
