startx not starting X :(

I installed XFree86 and the newest Xserver for my nVidia Geforce video card. When i run xinit, it loads and shows the X terminal.

problem #1) my Intellimouse Explorer USB wil move to the SE,NE or E or the screen, but if i pick it up or move a different direction it jumps to the bottom left of the screen.


Problem #2) When I try to run X by startx, it flashes the screen, then i get the errors:

could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list

/dev/dsp: No such device

gnome-login-check: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6: undefined symbol: _fxstat

gnome-login-check: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6: undefined symbol: _lxstat

I had some conflicts with gpm when I installed X4.01--killing it and removing it from the startup scripts made my mouse ok again.

As for your display I'm not sure: I've had a myriad of problems with X, but never those errors. I had similar but different errors just after I changed to Icewm from Sawfish--that was last night and my solution was shutting down to deal with it another day. But now I'm rambling because I'm bored and unhelpful...
