I read yesterday that the latest, not stable but nearly so, version of koffice was available for download for last evaluations before introducing a stable version in the next few months.
I finally found it for Drake 8.0 at http://ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/kde/unstable/koffice-1.1-beta3/Mandrake/8.0/i586/ if I read my bookmarks correctly, which means I may have it wrong. Sigh.
There were warnings the kdelibs needed updated, but I ran a test, and there were no dependencies listed. So, I installed that sucker, and it looks really great.
Congratulations to the koffice team, though they have no intention of stopping now.
I had complained that there were no page numbers listed, and no way to install foreign characters.
Both things fixed. Cool.
