I have just installed RedHat 7.0 and upgraded to 2.4.3 kernel. I want to install a mail server here so that My friends and I can retrieve mail from anywhere. Any ideas as to which server to consider?

Thanks!

I have heard of Qmail. Does that allow a user to retrieve mail through a POP3 or IMAP client? I believe Qmail is only used to sendmail? In our office we use Sendmail and PostFIX. I have heard of DNS problems with Qmail. Is this so?

Sendmail, Postfix, Exim, and Qmail are SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) servers. Generally speaking, you would use one of these to facilitate _sending_ mail to your ISP for delivery, or some variation thereof. You would need something like a POP3 or IMAP server to allow users to download. There are various ones available like qpopper, Courier IMAP, and WU-IMAP.

Overall picture for a home user would be like this: use fetchmail to retrieve the mail from the ISP(s), use sendmail to deliver it to the appropriate user's mail spool, procmail to sort the mail, and redirect it to other mailboxes, kill spam, etc. and something like wu-imapd to allow your friends to access their mail from another machine. The details are what I'm still struggling w/ ;)

While I would have liked to remove my profile and personal information from LinuxNewbie.org, I am not permitted to do so. While I have contacted internet.com for the abuse from the administration at linuxnewbie.org I have to wait for any further action. I used to do the popular posts for Pretty Fonts in Netscapes which was closed to because of Derek who goes under the username "Neurotica". They also have a habit of sabotaging your member ratings so becareful of that. You can learn more about that by visiting my web site or calling me at home. That information is in my signature.
