I am a Linux newbie. I have downloaded iptables.1.2.2. And I want to compile this.
Where should i copied this(Directory).Will it affect my present kernel?.

1. What distro are you using.
2. IPTABLES needs to be configured in the kernel ( you will probably have to do a kernel compile).
3. IMHO it's best to compile it into the kernel and not as a module.

Yes, we will need to know what distro you are using, *but*:
If you don't know how to do this sort of thing, it's likely that you've chosen a distro that comes with an RPM of iptables, which can be installed just like any other RPM.
