Hello all,

Well, I’m trying to compile KDE2.2.1 from source. I have qt-2.3.2 installed and have complied and installed most of the packages, but I have a few questions. I am running SuSE 7.1 and upgraded KDE 2.0.1 to KDE 2.1.1 with rpm’s. I want kdevelop 2.0 and therefore need KDE 2.2.1.
So here are the questions:

1) when I run “make install” for the new packages, does it un-install the old KDE packages, or do I need to do that myself?
2) if I uninstall via Yast2 all KDE packages, will the source code I have be enough to get everything up and running? I think yes, but am not sure.
3) When I run “make install” can I do it from within a KDE session(I think no) or do I need to be at a plain console?
Ok that’s all for now. I have a few other questions, but I’ll wait until these are answered. Thanks for the replies in advance.

Brian.

1. No and Yes

2. The source code will be the complete KDE environment.

3. Outside of KDE and X.

Why not just get the 2.2.1 rpm's and do a upgrade? Uninstalling the rpm's and then installing from source may break things. Not sure, but it might.

Thanks for the reply,

I have limited bandwith and expensive internet access and the source code came on a cd i got for free. So, rpm's for now are out of the question. Plus i like the chalange of doing things the hard way.

I'm currently compling the code in KDE and when everything is ready, i'll remove KDE with Yast2 and run all the make installs. I hope it all works.
