I downloaded the newest mozilla (0.9.3) and its quite faster than the earlier releases. Still, I have yet to get java working :( I definitely have the jre.xpi plugin in the plugins directory so I don't know whats up. Anybody else have this problem?
Aside from that, has anybody tried the newest Netscape 6.1 or the PR release of 6.1? I've heard that is came a long way since the dreadful 6.0 release.

yeah, I did try 'em. But it crashes on some when I goto some websites. Mozilla used to, but I'm running 0.9.2 now and it works fine. Like when I goto a sourceforge project, and goto the files section. It would crash. Maybe it's just my system, old library or something, but it's unexceptable.

Netscape 6.1 = Mozilla 0.9.1 + bloat. It wont make getting java working any easier and will in fact perform slower than even the version of Mozilla which it is based upon, which itself is slower than the latest version.
If you want to get java working in Mozilla read the documentation at www.mozilla.org (http://www.mozilla.org) as it is explained fairly clearly. Even with the documentation I have found that for java applets you are better off using Netscape 4.7x. Realistically how many website do you frequent that really require you to be able to utilize Java applets ... I know I frequent very few. By default Mozilla handles Java script very well and that is alot more prevelant than Java applets anyway. Of course thats just my opinion.

Hey r0nster --

I had the same frustrations with Mozilla .7. I tried everything in both Mozilla's documentation as well as Sun Microsystem's.

What was even more frustrating is that I have the java SDK installed so I also have a jre. I followed all the prescriptions about throwing a symlink to the /ns00/jreplugin_oji.so (or whatever that file was) in the Mozilla plugin directory, but that would actually keep Mozilla from launching.

Finally, I just logged in as root, fired up Mozilla, and went to http://java.sun.com. That little panel opened up in the upper left of the screen indicating that there isn't a plugin for type java/x application (or whatever) and click here to download it.

Now I had gone through that several times as a user, and the download just stalled, never giving me the option to log in as root, but this time it worked.

So, just log in as root, and do the download -- it should work pretty easily.

Yeppers, thats the key, You need to download it as root - web surf to a japa page as root - the plugin rerquest pops up allowing you to download it and install it. Then all you do after its done is exit from the browser and log out of root, login as a lower user and fire up the browser again. This technique also allowed LimeWire to run with no flaws as well - I recommend you all try it

An update:
I went to Sun's java site and downloaded the jre .bin from there and installed it to my system and make the symlink, blah..... It works. What I would like to know is why jre.xpi didn't work. I then went to java.sun.com to load their page and the browser crashed with the talkback agent window popping up. I restarted and went back and it loaded fine. Like Demetrius has said, Java performs better in Netscape 4.7.x than in the newwer browser but both old and new browsers are still prone to acting up.
I frequent the southern region National Weather Service page and their radar loop feature depends on java plugins in the browsers.

I read that there is a known bug that necessitates you to close your browser after installing the plugin, then restart, close, then restart your browser again.

I can't even guess why...

Glad to hear that you got java to work. I really can't stand Netscape 4.7 -- it has the crappiest fonts, and seems to vomit whenever it gets to a complicated table layout.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how to get java to work under Konqueror at the moment, so wish me luck.
