3rd Nic card.. Current 3com 3c905b.. still no go.

Okay.. I have three Nic cards laying around now... SMC 1211-TX Linksys LNE100 and the currently installed 3com 3c905b-TX. I am still unable to get as far as getting linux to admit that I even own a Nic card! Anybody know of any newbie how to's on this subject that explain things in Linux baby talk? I guess thats what I need... ie.. "insert floppy in drive before mounting it" I am just about ready to give it up.. spending $100 on extra Nic cards in order to use a free operating system is just not making since anymore. Then there is my printer.. a Hewlett Packard thats not usable under linux.
::sigh:: I really want to make this work.. but the help files that are available are not written in newbie context. Any advice? Links? Any Help is appreciated.
