I just realized how much we were ripped off, by purchasing a computer package deal from future shop. :( Im really disapointed. Its a hp 7940 pavillion computer package, and the worst thing is, Linux is no good on it. They used cheapass components, it doesnt even have a real sound card, its intergrated into the motherboard! Not only that, but it has only 3 of thoes slots on the mother board for cards, and 2 of them are used up! Im thinking maybe this one should be sold and i just build one from scratch.. Its still pretty new, it was purchased in mid August. It has a pentium 3, 1gig processor, 265 MBs SD ram, a 40 GIG hard drive, 8x4x32x CD-RW, and a 12x dvd. Its got all the 5 year warrenty and crap like that.

Anywayz, what do you think could be gotten for it? Oh its also got a ethernet card and a 56k modem.. 11MB video memory.

After taXES it cost 2500 canadian dollars. This was with a 17" monitor, a colour printer and a scanner.. The scanner costs somthing like 100 bucks, 150 for the printer.

I would appriciate any advice on what to do such as---> sell and build a computer from scratch.. and an idea of how much its worth.. :(

it might be instructive to *try* to get linux working on it. might even be fun (as in interesting).
as to what it'd be worth, used, i'm not sure. but there are sites that sell used/refurbished systems that you might be able to use as guides.

I often shop at Future Shop (the store on Yonge St. is on my route from work) though I only buy what is on sale and a good deal. I would never ever purchase one of their systems.

Can you try to return it? I often see others bringing back entire systems though I'm not sure about how long you have to be able to do that.

Next pc... Build your own. I haven't bought a complete system since my 386.

You would have to ask them at the store about their return policies. For your sake, I hope they do.

Damn I hate seeing people ripped off by these brand name companies that put junk for parts in their pc's and charge a high price just for their name being on the case.

here here....

I heard that one!

Best Buy around here is the same. They have good deals some times on parts, but their emaichines etc.... are such junk.

When I'm in there and I see these people talking about buying a PC, I just want to go up to them and tell them that they are going to get ripped off.

Then again, these people would have no idea they were getting ripped off becuase the machine would do what they want... surf the net, listen to music, play Freecell....

:p

Actually emachines make pretty good cheap boxes, I used one all summer that was like a Celery 533, and it worked admirably.
