According to http://www.grapevine.net/~gromitkc/20010604b.html , the 3 COM USR 2977 is a good modem, which doesn't need a linmodem driver to work in a Linux box.

But according to http://www.googlegear.com/ggweb/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=703204-PAM , the same modem only works in linux systems.

Can someone please clarify this? Does anyone have this modem and can tell me if it is a true hardware modem?

Thanks

Also, has anyone noticed significant differences in performance between linmodems and hardware modems?

If it works in Linux without any special drivers, then it will work in windows.

That seems to be a hardware modem, so all is well.

I have the exact same modem. It works in every OS you can think of, so you shouldn't have a problem.
