My Epson Stylus Color 440 just ran out of black ink (at least I think it did, but the warning light didn't come on). I totally hate this printer (it's loud and slow, and I never print photos anyway), so rather than replace the cartridge, I'm considering buying another printer.

Any recommendations in the < $200 range?

My work just bought me a Epson Stylus 780 for printing cd labels etc. Very impressed with it so far since I've printed 400 color labels and I'm still on the original cartridge.

Cost around $220. up here, so would be less than 2 bills in the U.S.

I use it under Windows though a new install of my distro detected it during the install. Haven't had a chance to do any printing under Linux yet.

If you want mainly black and white, the lexmark z-52 is fast and prints pretty well. The drawback is the cost of consumables is outrageous. Other than that, any of the hp 900 series seem to have reasonable prices for the ink and such and print quickly. If you can afford it, the 990 does 17ppm in b&w! I also like the epson 780 and 880. Cheap consumables, fast and quiet. You have lots of options, but stay away from canon and cheaper hp and lexmarks. Hope that helps... :D
