Anyone running their DVD player under linux?
I'd like to get either a Pioneer or Toshiba.
Which distribution are you using?
Did you have to recompile the kernel to get it to work or was it automatically detected and ready to go.
What video card are you using to get good quality DVD play back?
A Voodoo5 5500/Radeon/GeForce2/Ultra/3?
I'd like to do the Radeon since it has DVD function already, without the need of additional DVD software.
Thanks.

xine.sourceforge.net is just one of the dvd players.
You could try a search at freshmeat.net

I have a Pioneer 303S and a Radeon 32MB DDR. it plays very well with xine and okay with videolan. No recompile necessary, but you have to have certain X libraries that are not a problem if you are up to date with XF86.

Yes, "Ron" thats very good news, thank you. :)
I'm trying to ditch Windows OS altogether and run only linux.
Good to know about the Radeon, cause I plan to get the "All In Wonder" DDR Radeon. :)
I plan to use the latest version of either Radhat or Mandrake so having the essential X libraries should be included since these should also have up to date XF86, right?
So, the software/proggie "xine" I take it"s not included in the chosen distribution(Redhat or Mandrake)so I'll have to download and install the RPM or tar file, right?
If so, is it available in a RPM? I hope so.
Thanks :)

Slackware 7.1 running kernel 2.4.6

Recompiled. Made a few changes to /etc/fstab and added a couple of links in the /dev directory.

GeForce2 GTS (Hercules 3D Prophet II Pro)Images are *very* good with minimal artifacts. Occasional sound crackling but nothing serious.

You still need DVD playback software. As others have said, try out xine. I'm also running the latest Nvidia drivers and XFree 4.1.0. I'm using xine compiled from source although you can use a pre-compiled .rpm if you wish.
In a nutshell, any DVD player should work just fine under Linux. I've got a generic 12X DVD, I think its made by Samsung. Works like a champ, and yes I also use xine (http://xine.sourceforge.net/). You'll note that there are several different packages, RPM's, Slackpacks and good ole tarballs. All DVD players will look and act like a regular CDROM to Linux until you use Xine or something to play a DVD.
About the only hitch to using Xine or other DVD players under Linux is in getting the copyright protection decoded so it'll play right. For this you'll need libcss or a css plugin for xine. I won't link to them here because they jump around alot, but they're pretty easy to find and install. Luck!

Mandrake and RedHat should both come with xine .rpm's. If not, you can get them at rpmfind.net. It's pretty easy to build from source too. I did it for my Slack box.
ATI cards are some of the best for DVD since native hardware playback is built in.

Yep, Thats what I've learned too.
Nice to know xine should already be included.
I've pretty much finalized my decision/choices as far as hardware is concerned.
Plextor 16x10x40 CDR
DVD Pioneer or Toshiba 16x
ATI Radeon "All In Wonder"
Distribution, not really sure yet, but as previously mentioned it'll be one or the other, Redhat7.1 or Mandrake8.
I've used Redhat5.2 and 6.1 before but never Mandrake and heard good things about Mandrake.
I think either will not only meet my hardware upgrade needs but also my desktop and power of a Xterminal needs. :)
Thanks.

I've got the Pioneer DVD-116. I based my decision on http://www.storagereview.com/articles/leaderboard.html
I think its only ~$55 now too... :D
I use the CVS version of xine and it works very well.

Im using Mandrake 8.0 with version 4.0.3 of XFree (the latest version w/ Mandrake) and I dont have the X libs necessary to run xine. Everybody talks about how great it is.... wish I could try it. No one can tell me where to find these libs. Ive asked around here several times. Good luck!!
