Newbie trying install of LinuxMandrake, and Storm LInux (free in a MAximum Linux mag CD) but the installs can't work through my board's built in Highpoint Hot Rod RAID controller. (Running it striped over two UDMA66 disks)

Trying to create a dual boot machine. PArtition Magic is willing to create the space for me...

I've also downloaded the Debian CD Image, but got lost unpacking it.

Any end-runs around the Install program?

If you have set up RAID (for Win disks) in the HPT370, you won't get Linux installed.
The HPT 'Raid Controller' is actually no-good for Linux (built/designed for Win).

Do a search in the Tech.Supp and Hardware forums here (lot of posts on the topic), and try a search on http://www.google.com/linux also.

Cheers :)

Thanks,
I searched using "ABIT K7A RAID" but didn't find anything.

Thanks

Hmmm .... that may be because the board actually is named KT7A RAID (AMD Socket A) or KA7 100 (AMD Slot A) ... and not K7A

hee hee. I guess that might have something to do with it.

Yup :D

BTW, I'm running a Abit KT7-RAID (not the A version) board here - Duron 700 and 256MB Ram - with two IBM 30 Gig Deskstars as master on each HPT370 controller.
Mandrake 7.2 installed flawlessly and runs smooth as silk (no dualboot, native Linux).

Cheers :)

Sounds like a sweet box. I've built this one up over the last couple of months with a 1Gig T-bird OC'ed to 1.2 and 256MB RAM. I got the MB specifically to try to speed up my dated hardrives (two 9GB Fireballs) so I really hate letting go of the controller in Windows just to try Linux.
The configuration does seem to speed up Photoshop and other apps that write large temp files. Of course, I'd love to go SCSI, but can't afford the jump.
I guess I should stop whining, I was just looking at 20GB Deskstars for not much more than $100.

Just ditto-ing what Choozo said... I installed Mandrake 7.2 on a KT7A-RAID a couple weeks ago. It even recognized a Linksys LNE100TX NIC without a hassle. Sorry I can't be of any real assistance other than to say, "It can be done..."

ok...It is most likely possible...Because I got my ata100 to work with slackware 7.2(not official release)..anyways it all worked fine except for one little thing LILO. So I think you should be able to your HPT(ctrl+h i believe) setup and your raid configuration should be possible. I'm not sure as how linux will like it.

I figured out why I was confused about which mainboard I'm running.
My main box at home (where I now am -did you miss me?) is running an Abit KA7 with a 500MHZ SlotA OC'ed to 605 and 128MB RAM. Of course it's also tied to a 56K modem
I've tried to put Linux on it, but I'm running a Promise Ultra66 controller --non RAID-- in it (the board only supports Ultra33)and so far, the installers that I have don't like it either.
The Mandrake disk I've got is version 7.0, so maybe that has something to do with it.
I'm waiting for the forums search about it (the card)now

47 results of search on Promise Ultra66 and counting....

Running RAID 0 on the HPT370 under Linux us right out for the moment. I've looked around (and loaded up the installer for Mandrake 8.0) and Linux will not see this as one big drive. It has to do with the HPT and Promise controllers not really being hardware RAID but a hardware/software combo. I hear the AMI controller will work though, but don't have the bucks to go out and snag one yet.

I forgot, there are some resources out there for installing on the Promise controller for Mandrake 7.2, but 8.0 SHOULD support it right out of the box, as there's support for it in the 2.4.x kernel releases.
